To our second pony club newsletter.

This newsletter is all about things happening in our pony club and written by our pony club members. We hope to produce this monthly as a way of reporting on things we have done and achieved, include a game or puzzle and a mention on what we are planning on doing next.

WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO?

In February we have been doing our Care of the Horses foot badge. We have learnt the inside and outside structure of the horse’s foot and problems that can occur. We have covered how to care for the foot i.e. picking out and oiling and how to recognise signs of a newly shod foot or when they are due for shoeing. We also learnt about the shape of the foot and the different angle between the front and the hinds.

We are able to recognise the difference between a well cared for foot and a badly cared for foot. We also briefly covered farriers tools and the shoeing process. We all passed our Care of the Horses foot badge successfully, unfortunately Stuart forgot to order our badges but we are assured they are on the way!

Next we will be learning about foaling. There is not a badge for this but with Willow due to foal shortly it seems fitting to talk about it.

FULL NAME : Dwee Dragonfly

COLOUR : Fleabitten grey

BREED : Part bred Welsh

AGE : 18

HEIGHT : 12.0 hh

CHARACTERISTICS : Quite easily spooked, she has a flighty temperament.

WHY SHE IS PONY OF THE MONTH : Dwee came to the school with Laminitis and up until Christmas 2008 it was kept under control. Over the Christmas shutdown, helped with the really hard ground from frosts her condition came back . She was so bad she wasn’t able to work and we almost lost her. With help from the Farrier and Vet  she has recovered and is fully back to her old self.

LIKES : Going fast, eating carrots & jumping.

DISLIKES : Most of the other ponies!
