AUTUMN NEWSLETTER 2010
WELCOME
Welcome to our
Autumn Newsletter.
At the time of
writing the weather has turned mild and dry again, just as we were thinking the
wetter weather had arrived! The land is very quickly drying out and the mildness
will bring a brief growth of grass and although not necessarily rich, constant
feed monitoring of the horses remains important.
Our
neighbouring farmers are busy ploughing, closely followed by the drilling
tractor sowing rape or barley/wheat. We managed to get all our haylege in and in
total made close to 700 bales.
The equipment
we purchased allowing us to do more of the grass harvest work ourselves,
although expensive, meant we were able to make our own decisions as to when to
cut, turn, bale and wrap which hopefully results in having top class feed with
very little mouldy bales. So far, those we have opened have been excellent.
THE HORSES
We have swapped
all the horses over to winter routine now so all the stables are full at night
and the only horses left out overnight are those that really don’t settle in
like Henry.
Jade was
referred to Rossdales equine hospital at Newmarket to have part of her frog (the
soft triangular bit in the horses foot) removed which had an infected growth
called canker. She spent 6 days in hospital and has been on box rest at our
livery yard since returning home. We have been dressing the foot every day and
our vets are pleased with progress, they even suggested we may be able to have
her back by Christmas which would be a result.
Rocky had his
X-rays done which indicate that his leg has healed and he has returned to light
work. We will gradually increase this as he gets fitter.
Lai also had
X-rays done and hers show arthritis in her hocks. We are currently looking into
possible treatments to help her.
Mickey is
progressing well and although he does have an occasional attitude he is willing
to learn and we hope to have him available soon.
We have been
loaned little Bracken who has already been trained to a high standard and has
proved popular with riders.
Honeypot Riders Tack Shop
Our little tack
shop located to the left of the main stable block is crammed full of riders
clothing.
We stock a
quality product at an affordable price and avoid the often expensive branded
items. We also stock Hoggs of Fife country wear goods.
We have regular
orders to our suppliers so aim to get ordered items in quickly. We have had some
problems with Shires products selling out from the warehouse very fast this year
but can often offer alternatives.
Our shop is
always staffed at weekends and can be opened at anytime during the week when
lessons are running.
Hot and cold
drinks are also available.
Posters for
forthcoming activities will go up on the notice board as soon as finalised and
on our website:
